What Does the Bible Mean by ‘Adoption’?
Adoption is more than a metaphor. The New Testament word — the Greek huiothesia, “placing as a son” — means God gives believers the full standing of His children and heirs.
The Three Strands the Word Holds Together
Strand 1Placed as sons
Huiothesia is literally “the placing as a son” (huios, son + thesis, placing). Believers receive the full standing of God’s children — “no longer a slave but a son” (Galatians 4:7).
Strand 2By grace, through Christ
“God sent forth His Son … that we might receive the adoption as sons” (Galatians 4:4–5); adoption “by Jesus Christ … according to the good pleasure of His will” (Ephesians 1:5). Not by nature but by grace.
Strand 3Sealed now, glory to come
“The Spirit Himself bears witness … that we are children of God” (Romans 8:16), and we cry “Abba, Father” (Galatians 4:6); yet we await “the adoption, the redemption of our body” (Romans 8:23).
What the Key Texts Say
| Passage | Emphasis | What it teaches |
|---|---|---|
| Galatians 4:4–5 | Through Christ | “God sent forth His Son … that we might receive the adoption as sons.” |
| Ephesians 1:5 | By His will | Adoption “as sons by Jesus Christ … according to the good pleasure of His will.” |
| Romans 8:15 | Not bondage | “You received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, ‘Abba, Father.’” |
| Galatians 4:6 | Abba, Father | “God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, ‘Abba, Father!’” |
| Romans 8:16 | The Spirit’s witness | “The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.” |
| Galatians 4:7 | Sons and heirs | “No longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.” |
| John 1:12 | The right | “To them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name.” |
| Romans 8:17 | Joint heirs | “If children, then heirs — heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ.” |
| Romans 8:23 | Not yet | “Eagerly waiting for the adoption, the redemption of our body.” |
Two Common Misunderstandings
Adoption is not natural sonship. We are God’s children by grace, not by birthright — “you received the Spirit of adoption” (Romans 8:15), given “the right to become children of God” (John 1:12). A gift received, not a status we already held.
Adoption is not a lesser standing. In Scripture the adopted son has the full status and inheritance of a son: “no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir” (Galatians 4:7; Romans 8:17). Adopted children are true heirs.
So, What Is Adoption?
Adoption is God’s placing of believers as His own sons and daughters — full children, full heirs, not by nature but by grace through Christ. The Spirit seals it, teaching us to cry “Abba, Father,” and it is completed when He raises us in glory. Not slaves but sons.
Sources & Notes Greek word study: huiothesia (Strong’s G5206), “adoption, the placing as a son,” from huios (son) + thesis (a placing) — a term drawn from Greco-Roman adoption, by which one received the full rights and status of a son. The New Testament uses it of God’s relation to His people (Romans 8:15; Galatians 4:5; Ephesians 1:5) and of its future consummation (Romans 8:23). See Thayer’s and W. E.
