What Does the Bible Mean by the ‘Word of God’?
Where did the Bible come from? The New Testament word — the Greek theopneustos, “God-breathed” — answers: Scripture is breathed out by God, given through men carried along by His Spirit.
The Three Strands the Word Holds Together
Strand 1God-breathed
Theopneustos (theos, God + pneo, breathe) means “breathed out by God.” “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God” (2 Timothy 3:16). Its ultimate Author is God.
Strand 2Through Spirit-carried men
“Prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit” (2 Peter 1:21). Human writers, divine source — neither invention nor dictation.
Strand 3Living, true, and sufficient
“Living and powerful, sharper than any two-edged sword” (Hebrews 4:12); “Your word is truth” (John 17:17). It “cannot be broken” (John 10:35), endures forever, and equips “for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:17).
What the Key Texts Say
| Passage | Emphasis | What it teaches |
|---|---|---|
| 2 Timothy 3:16 | God-breathed | “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine … for correction.” |
| 2 Timothy 3:17 | Equipping | “That the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” |
| 2 Peter 1:21 | By the Spirit | “Holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.” |
| Hebrews 4:12 | Living and powerful | “The word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword.” |
| John 17:17 | Truth | “Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.” |
| John 10:35 | Unbreakable | “The Scripture cannot be broken.” |
| Matthew 24:35 | Enduring | “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.” |
| 1 Peter 1:25 | Forever | “The word of the Lord endures forever.” |
| Psalm 119:105 | A lamp | “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” |
Two Common Misunderstandings
Inspiration is not mere human genius or mechanical dictation. Scripture is “God-breathed” (2 Timothy 3:16), yet given through men “moved by the Holy Spirit” (2 Peter 1:21) — not the writers’ own invention, and not dictation that bypassed them, but God speaking through Spirit-carried men.
The word is not outdated or optional. It “cannot be broken” (John 10:35), “endures forever” (1 Peter 1:25), and is sufficient to equip us “for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16–17). Not a dead letter, but living and enough.
So, What Is the Word of God?
The word of God is Scripture breathed out by God — His own speech, given through men carried by the Holy Spirit. It is true and unbreakable, living and powerful, and it endures forever. Not the words of men about God, but the word of God through men — enough to make us wise for salvation and equip us for every good work.
Sources & Notes Greek word study: theopneustos (Strong’s G2315), “God-breathed, inspired by God,” from theos (God) + pneo (to breathe) — used in 2 Timothy 3:16. Scripture is graphe (“writing”); God’s word is also called logos (the message) and rhema (the spoken word). See Thayer’s and W. E. Vine’s dictionaries; for depth, BDAG and the TDNT (Kittel) articles.
